Attention: Wirral Dolly Blue I never got round to talking about this, but what did you think of Bolton's escape last season? When I saw them (albeit on MOTD highlights) against Villa at the beginning of April, they looked atrocious and certain candidates for the drop, but then some good results, coupled with a bit of good fortune at Middlesbrough (to think of one example) saw them pull clear.
What are your expectations for them in 2008-09?

I only get to talk about it to my psychiatrist, so it's good to be able to share this with you Brian.
I lost a lot of interest in Bolton Wanderers after they took £200 off me to watch the reserves in Lisbon, then fail to beat 10 man Wigan. I personally couldn't have cared less if we went down at that point. I boycotted games, went to watch the Dollies more often and just felt cheated and betrayed by BWFC. There was no elation at achieving safety. It was, like you said, a hell of a lot of luck that gained us points in those last few games.
One of the few games I attended towards the end of the season was the victory over Sunderland which was the last home game of the season. Normally after the last home match, the players come back out and do a lap of honour, but I said even if they do, I wouldn't be staying around for it. What was there to feel good about? The season before we celebrated qualifying for Europe, how can anyone celebrate survival 12 months later? What kind of an acievement is that?
Anyway, I thought to myself that after 25 years of following Bolton Wanderers, i'd had enough and lost all interest, but then the season ticket renewals come through and you think hmmmm under £300 for Premiership Football, maybe it's not too bad. Then we spend £5m on Muamba and £11m on Elmander, get rid of dead wood like Campo, Stelios and all of a sudden the interest is back again and i'm looking forward to 16th August v Stoke.
2008/2009 will be a strange season. Wanderers will play a completely different style to what they have in previous years, but then again Sammy Lee tried to last year and failed. I'm not convinced about Megson or any of the backroom team, Elmander has cost alot of money for someone who has won and achieved so little. Muamba could be a good prospect, but if he is good enough, surely he would have made it at Arsenal.
Unfortunately, despite all the optimism, I can only see another season of struggle and 17th or above being an achievement.

They definitely will be a different type of football under Megson, the ball will be pumped higher into the air than under Big Sam.

Remember Isaih Rankin, scored a cracking goal against North End at the Reebok, he has just signed for Crawley.

Isiah was on a 3 month loan and no one could ever understand why we never did a permanent deal. The goal he scored against PNE was belting and he also scored a blinder against Burnley if I remember.
I think it was Bratford he came to us on loan from.

Well it's good to see, WDB, that you haven't deserted them, after 25 years I suppose it's in the blood. Many people will say that two of the relegation places are already filled by Stoke and Hull, so Bolton only have ONE to avoid. However, who can say? One thing I always remember is after the 2001 play-off final, when Bolton were perhaps a bit flattered by two very late goals, the pundits in the studio were even then mentioning the words 'Bolton' and 'relegation' in the same sentence.
I must say if someone had said in 2002 (or was it 2003?) that Campo would still be playing for the club in 2008, I wouldn't have believed them. Mercenary or not, Bolton got good service out of him and anyone who plays about 200 games for Real Madrid must be a decent player. Stelios was a strange case; only a couple of years ago it was said he was being targeted by Liverpool but seemed to go downhill ever since. I don't know how many games he played last season - it didn't seem many - perhaps Megson just felt his style didn't suit a relegation scrap.
